SHIELD TV Gets Updated to Pie, Features Updated Settings UI and Hulu + Live TV App

SHIELD TV Gets Updated to Pie, Features Updated Settings UI and Hulu + Live TV App

SHIELD TV is receiving Software Experience Upgrade 8.0 this morning, based on Android Pie.

As for what’s new, it’s a solid list. Those who update will see an updated Settings menu, enjoy the latest security patches, have access to a Match Content Color Space feature for HDR televisions (automatically switch your display mode to deliver more accurate colors), and will also be first to receive the updated Hulu + Live TV app.

According to NVIDIA, many apps on SHIELD have been upgraded already, including Netflix that now supports Dolby Digital Plus 5.1 surround sound for audio up to 640 kbps.

If you own a SHIELD TV, you should see the update notification pop up automatically on your device.

Verizon Moto Z2 Force Getting Pie, Which Means 5G Moto Mod Support

Verizon Moto Z2 Force Getting Pie, Which Means 5G Moto Mod Support

We learned recently that Motorola decided against shipping out Pie to the Moto Z2 Force for customers on AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile. However, the Pie update was still green lit for Verizon, because without the Pie update, the phone wouldn’t support the 5G Moto Mod, and thus, not be able to access Verizon’s mobile 5G network.

Today, that Pie update is rolling out to Moto Z2 Force owners on Verizon.

While having Pie is great, and it comes with all of the features you expect to be inside of Pie (new navigation options, improved Do Not Disturb, etc.), this update brings support for the 5G Moto Mod, as Motorola said it would back in May.

The software version is labeled as PCX29.159-21 and we assume the package size is large.

Once updated, we assume getting 5G up and running on your Z2 Force is relatively painless. First, you’ll need … Read the rest

Razer Announces Pie is Coming to Original Razer Phone in Coming Weeks

Razer Announces Pie is Coming to Original Razer Phone in Coming Weeks

On Tuesday, we posted that Razer appears to have abandoned the original Razer Phone, with the device currently sitting on July, 2018’s security patch. There was no word from Razer on Pie or any other security patch updates. Yesterday in the Razer subreddit, the company announced plans to push Pie to the device in the coming weeks in reply to a user who shared our post.

Here’s what was posted on reddit by Razer.

We will release an Android Pie upgrade – which includes Android security updates – for the original Razer Phone in coming weeks. We thank all our fans for their support and patience.

This is great news for any Razer Phone owners, but the timing is suspect. While no one is going to turn away an update, the fact that it took so long for Razer to get this info out to its customers is pretty … Read the rest

Motorola Gives Up on Pie Update for T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T Moto Z2 Force

Motorola Gives Up on Pie Update for T-Mobile, Sprint, AT&T Moto Z2 Force

Motorola promised back in August of last year that it would deliver Android Pie to the Moto Z2 Force. Now, almost a year later, they’ve decided they’ll only push that update out to the Verizon version, leaving T-Mobile, AT&T, and Sprint Z2 Force owners on Oreo for the rest of their shatterproof lives.

The Verizon version of the Moto Z2 Force is still scheduled to get Android Pie because in order to work with the 5G Moto Mod, it needs Android 9. And as we learned a few weeks ago, the Z2 Force will gain support for the 5G Moto Mod later this summer.

What’s the deal, why would Motorola cut support like this? Motorola isn’t big on supporting phones with big software updates for a full two years it seems. In case you missed it, they told us that their brand new Moto Z4 was only Read the rest

Verizon’s LG G7 Gets Updated to Android Pie

Verizon’s LG G7 Gets Updated to Android Pie

LG is pushing its 2nd Android Pie update in the US, this time to the G7 ThinQ on Verizon. It’s June 5 and Android Pie was released in August of last year, so there isn’t much to say here. It’s absolutely pathetic that it has taken this long for LG to release these updates.

The update arrives as build G710VM20a and only contains the April Android security patch.

LG G7 users will get optional gesture navigation, volume keys that default to adjusting media, new camera modes (Cine shot, Part Slo-Mo, and AI composition), the ability to run two accounts through the same app, annnnnnnd that’s mostly it.

It’s freakin’ June. We’re on the Android Q Beta 4 with stable Q about two months away. Good lord, LG, you are bad at this.

LG is Finally Pushing a Pie Update in the US: Verizon’s V40 ThinQ

LG is Finally Pushing a Pie Update in the US: Verizon’s V40 ThinQ

Just over a year ago, LG tried to sell the world on this idea that they were finally ready to take software updates seriously by opening a Software Upgrade Center. Since opening that center, I think it’s safe to say that they’ve become one of the worst Android manufacturers when it comes to updating anything. The LG Software Upgrade Center does nothing, as far as we can tell. To prove that, all you need to do is look at the number of Android Pie updates LG has pushed out.

In the US, we might be getting our first Android Pie update today. Today. It’s May 24 and Android Pie was released on August 6 of last year. We’ve seen all of Google’s phones, 3-year old OnePlus’ phones, and Samsung phones as old as the Galaxy S8 see the updates to Pie before LG pushed this first … Read the rest

Pie Update Officially Arrives for OnePlus 3, 3T

Pie Update Officially Arrives for OnePlus 3, 3T

OxygenOS 9.0.2, based on Android Pie, is now publicly available for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T

This launch comes after what feels like a few months of beta testing, and the fact that it’s here so relatively quickly is a great achievement on OnePlus’ part. As a reminder, the OnePlus 3 launched in June, 2016, so we’re talking about a major version of Android update nearly three years after the device’s launch. Some companies are having trouble updating their phones to Pie that were released last year.

The changelog for the update lists all of the typical Pie stuff, such as Do Not Disturb changes, the new UI, and more. On the OxygenOS side, OnePlus highlights its new Gaming Mode 3.0, general bug fixes, as well as Google Duo support inside of the Dialer app.

Here’s the full changelog.

Android Distribution Updated for May, Finally: Pie Enters at 10.4%

Android Distribution Updated for May, Finally: Pie Enters at 10.4%

It was late-October the last time Google updated its Android Distribution numbers. At that time, we were still waiting for Pie to make its debut on the chart, mostly so we could continue poking a bit of fun at Google and Android for its slow adoption rate. And just FYI, we only poke fun because we care.

Anyway, the chart has been updated for May, 2019, so here’s where we stand now, six months after the last time we saw these numbers.

Pie makes its debut at 10.4% of all devices! This seemingly good number is likely all thanks to Samsung having already updated most of its major releases to Pie, and on top of that, the company has launched three smartphones in 2019 running the latest Android OS publicly available. Not that it skews anything, but should those devices not be updated to Pie already, we’re certain that the … Read the rest
