On Tuesday, we have some rare good news from England. Bloodhound LSR, the land-speed-record car designed to reach 1,000mph, will finally get to travel to South Africa to begin high-speed testing. Until now, the rocket- and jet-powered machine had only been able to test at low speed—if 210mph (338km/h) can be considered low speed—on a runway in the United Kingdom. But in October, the team will take it to a specially prepared stretch of the Hakskeen Pan in South Africa and begin to stretch Bloodhound’s legs.

It has been quite an up-and-down ride for the land-speed effort. The project was started by Richard Noble, who set a land-speed record in 1982 with Thrust 2 and then spearheaded the Thrust

Update 7:23pm ET: As this post was being reported, Zoom developers reversed their previous position and issued an update that changes the contested behavior.

“Initially, we did not see the Web server or video-on posture as significant risks to our customers and, in fact, felt that these were essential to our seamless join process,” Zoom’s Jonathan Farley wrote. “But in hearing the outcry from our users in the past 24 hours, we have decided to make the updates to our service.”

Among the many technological breakthroughs of NASA’s Apollo project to land a man on the Moon was the Apollo Guidance Computer that flew onboard Apollo spacecraft. In an era when most computers were refrigerator-sized—if not room-sized—the AGC weighed only about 70 pounds. It was one of the first computers to use integrated circuits.

A team of computer historians got its hands on one of the original AGCs and got it working. A member of the team, Ken Shirriff, then decided to see if the computer could be used for bitcoin mining.

Mining is a key part of the process for maintaining bitcoin’s shared transaction ledger, or blockchain. To win the right to add a block to the blockchain, you

Dropbox Transfer tests direct sharing of files up to 100GB

Dropbox Transfer tests direct sharing of files up to 100GB

Dropbox is adding a new option for how its users can share files. Dropbox Transfer introduces a way to send files between people rather than simply sharing access for collaboration.

Files can be dragged and dropped directly from your computer or from within Dropbox storage. When you’re ready to send, Dropbox will create a link that can be shared with anyone so that they can have their own copy. The original file will remain in your possession. Transfer lets you send files of up to 100GB, a big leap over the file cap for sharing on most email services.

If you’re using Dropbox Transfer in a professional capacity, you can customize the download page to show your own uploaded image or just to set a different stock background color or artwork.

AT&T is Adding Automatic Fraud Call Blocking to Customers Accounts

AT&T is Adding Automatic Fraud Call Blocking to Customers Accounts

AT&T announced today that they plan to add automatic fraud call blocking and suspected spam-call alerts to their customers’ accounts.

New AT&T customers will have the feature automatically added to their new accounts, while “millions” of current customers will be notified of the addition “over the coming months.” If anyone wants to add the feature right away, they can go ahead and install the AT&T Call Protect app or add the feature manually through their accounts to get the benefits.

Because of a ruling by the FCC, AT&T can now provide call-blocking tools on an opt-out basis. In other words, they have been given the go-ahead to add robocall blocking services to your account, so if you don’t want them, you’ll have to turn them off in the near future.

We aren’t typically fans of opt-out services from wireless carriers, but robocall blocking is something we all need in our … Read the rest

AT&T will start restricting some Time Warner shows to its own streaming service, despite previously telling the government that it would distribute Time Warner content as widely as possible.

WarnerMedia, the division AT&T created when it bought Time Warner, today announced a new online streaming service called “HBO Max.” HBO Max will debut in the spring of 2020 and include exclusives that will no longer be available on other streaming platforms.

HBO Max will have exclusive streaming rights to all episodes of Friends, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and Pretty Little Liars. Friends and Pretty Little Liars are currently available on Netflix, so they’ll both leave that service by the time HBO Max launches.

Today, Apple refreshed much of its entry-level laptop lineup in time for a “Back to School” push that includes slashed prices for educators and students. The initiative some other perks, too, like a free pair of Beats headphones with certain Mac and iPad purchases. Additionally, the company discontinued the 12-inch MacBook and significantly cut prices of solid-state storage upgrade options across the Mac lineup, including in high-end models like the MacBook Pro and iMac Pro.

13-inch MacBook Pro updates

Previously, the 13-inch MacBook Pro lineup was divided into two categories: low-end, Touch Bar-free models, and higher-end models with Touch Bars. Now, every unit in the lineup is equipped with a Touch Bar, which brings into question some speculation by onlookers that Apple doesn’t want to further invest in the

Qualcomm Might Try and Save Wear OS Again With a New Chipset

Qualcomm released the Snapdragon Wear 3100 almost a year ago and I think it’s safe to say that the processor did little to help out Google’s Wear OS. It was most definitely not the savior we hoped it would be, as there are few Wear OS options to consider and only a handful that even run that new chip. Things could change in the next year, though!

According to a report from WinFuture, Qualcomm is in early stage development of a couple of chips currently called Snapdragon Wear 429 (WTP429W) and Snapdragon Wear 2700 (WTP2700). These chips appear to be customized versions of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 429 chip, which is a low-end processor built for phones. Before you freakout, don’t take “low-end” as being bad for a watch. A smartphone processor, even on the low-end, would be far better in terms of performance versus the old-as-hell Wear 3100 Qualcomm gave Read the rest
